West Pines Girls Clean Sweep of Region A Cup

GIRLS GONE WILD – WPU STYLE

The West Pines United under-12 and under-11 girls performed their own special version of “Girls Gone Wild” when they danced and rocked their way to both the Division 1 and Division 2 titles of the recently concluded FYSA Region A Championships. Shutting out their respective opponents in the Finals with identical 2-0 victories the girls scored an incredible 64 goals with only 8 scored against them in 20 games played.

DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONS

UNDER 12 - The Wayne Smith coached juggernaut put away Delray and the Miramar Strikers with 3-1 and 4-0 wins before being held to a 1-1 tie by Pinecrest whom they had to overcome in a penalty shoot-out immediately preceeding the semi-finals a week later in order to decide the group winner. Still feeling the effects of the shootout, the girls battled to a tough 3-2 semi-final victory over the Mako Sharks, finally taking the title with a 2-0 blanking of their first round opponents, Miramar. The team travels to Merritt Island on Saturday, March 28 to vie for the prestigious Presidents Cup and State Championship honors.

UNDER 11 - Fresh from their Kelme Cup victory in February the Richie Chin led squad gave up only 2 goals on their way to the championship while scoring 18 against their opponents. Huge wins over Wellington (4-0) and West Kendall (6-1), was followed with a bruising 1-0 scoreline against the Mako Sharks. With Mako in the semis as the wild-card, West Pines made no mistake in the rematch, literally going “wild" in a resounding 5-1 blow-out of their rivals. An exciting 2-0 victory over Pinecrest in the Finals booked their ticket to Merritt Island with their older club sisters.

DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS

An emphatic 2-0 victory over Pinecrest in the semi-final game led to the finals, a feisty Miami Lakes team and the eventual title. The squad heads to Jupiter on Saturday, March 28 to compete in the FYSA Division 2 State Championships.

UNDER 11 - With 3 West Pines teams already crowned champions before his final, coach Patrick Chin came under pressue to close out the
club’s small-field domination of the girls division in Region Cup play. His team, however, rose to the occasion completing their fourth shut-out
